Tuesday, March 29, 2011

I’ve done something this week that I have not done in years – I am wearing gold jewelry for two days in a row. I know this may seem trite – but, in actuality we all are (what I’ve recently learned is referred to as) either “team gold” or “team silver.” I think it may be what we are intrinsically drawn to. However, I do believe that this “team” business needs to go. I mean, what about mixing the two? Designers do it. Watch makers do it. Why can’t we do it? Come to find out – we can but there are a few simple rules that I found that I think are spot on.

Today’s look for me is pretty casual. It’s supposed to rain all week so I think it’s one of those, “I’d rather be napping” kinda weeks. Meaning, I’m not in the mood to doll up on a rainy day. Is that just a me thing??

Super simple outfit with a colorful t-shirt but the jacket is a very high quality Italian cloth which I got on sale at Banana Republic!

Topic of the Day: Mixing Gold and Silver Accessories

I found this article from youlookfab.com which is a British blog but has some great tips. Love to know what you think about mixing and matching your gold and silver. Is it too much of a taboo?

It’s perfectly acceptable to mix gold and silver jewelry, but there are some simple rules that can help you do so with style:

Keep your watch matched to the rings on that hand – it’s a good idea to match the metal of your wedding ring with your watch. You’ll be able to wear a ring in a different metal on the other hand though.

Keep jewelry that is in close proximity the same metal – earrings and necklaces should be the same metal; rings and wrist adornments should be the same metal; belt and bag hardware should be the same metal.

Keep all fine jewelry the same metal – if fine jewelry is all that you wear, it’s usually best to keep it either all gold or all silver.

Ignore the above rules if the pieces that you wear are made of mixed metals themselves – jewelry or accessories that mix silver and gold will allow you match either metal.

A couple of things you don’t want to do:

Wear gold and silver rings on the same hand

Wear a fine gold and diamond wedding ring with a sporty silver watch on the same hand

This is a tricky subject to write about because there are exceptions to every rule. When in doubt, stick to wearing one type of metal at a time.

Monday, March 28, 2011

I have to admit that there are few things that I dislike more than someone to tell me to “act my age.” I don’t and I won’t. I’m over 40 – but, I don’t have to act or dress like it. But, there are some things that are necessary for me to acknowledge that I can no longer wear. Today’s issue – skirt length.

I don’t often wear skirts to work in the winter but I do quite frequently in the spring and summer months. In honor of the supposed spring we are having – I broke out the first skirt of the work year. Allbeit a very warm wool skirt.

The sweater and the cami match the embrodery in the skirt.

Topic of the Day: Choosing the Right Skirt Length for your Age and Body Type

I thought this article was great! I found it at http://www.essortment.com/choosing-right-skirt-length-age-body-type-44605.html but I have no idea who the author is. I have always been pretty tall so I never thought of short women with long skirts or pleats making someone look bulky. Good stuff.

A quick reference guide to choosing the right skirt length for your age and body type.

Hemlines go up and down with each season, according to the whims of fashion designers, but choosing the right hemline for your body is important no matter what the current style might be. Different body types are suited to different styles of skirt, and even though you may be dying to wear that new ruffled mini or knee length pencil skirt, whether or not it will work on you depends on what you are personally suited for. Finding the right skirt length for your age and body type is an important element of looking your best. Here is a guide to choosing skirt length – no matter what your body type; there is a skirt that looks best on you. This guide will help you choose. There are a few common body types, and it’s easy to figure out which category you fall into by identifying some of your body’s main features – bust size, height, weight, and your general measurements.

The straight, or boyish frame: is your body pretty straight up and down? Are your bust, waist, and hip measurements all similar? If you fall into this category, you probably want a skirt that will help create some curves. Your best bets are skirts with structure – A-Line or knife pleat skirts, poofy skirts with tulle or netting in them, or flowy skirts made of substantial fabric. If you’re tall, a tiered (perhaps ruffled) skirt would work nicely, as would a floor length skirt of any material.

The curvy, or hourglass frame: if you’ve got an ample chest and a defined waist with rounded hips and something of a bottom, you probably fit this category. Women with hourglass frames are often of a petite height, so the last thing you would want would be a skirt that is going to overpower your small frame. Stay away from floor length skirts, shapeless or drawstring skirts, and skirts made of materials like crushed velvet. Also steer clear of anything cut at the calf. This cut does nothing for petite women, as it makes the legs seem much shorter than they really are. You want a skirt that will accentuate your curves and give a nice shape while drawing attention away from anything you don’t like about your hips and thighs. A slightly flared A-line skirt, cut at the knee or just above, will diminish your behind, even out your frame, and leave just enough leg showing.

The pear shaped frame: is your top small, while your bottom is larger than you might like? You might need to plan your entire outfit around de-accentuating your rear. This is easily accomplished by keeping in mind that darker colors on the bottom are minimizing, and are nicely balanced by a light colored top. A smooth, tailored skirt will do the minimizing trick nicely. You will also want to stay away from large prints, and big pleats.

The full curve, larger woman: do you have a fully rounded body with a less defined waist? Your body type does have many options that never have to include the shapeless muu-muu styles that make you look like somebody’s grandma. Try to avoid shapeless, baggy skirts and drawstring waists whenever possible. Pleats, also, will only add to a bulky look. Prints, especially big prints, can emphasize things you might not be too pleased with. Darker colors, such as black, blue, and deep purple, are slimming as well. To create a nice profile, try a flared a-line skirt, cut at or just below the knee, or a long tailored skirt of a heavy material, with two darts at the waist to help keep your stomach in check.

Okay, so not that kind of “skin.” Today is about skin issues. Just like everyone else I have my own set of personal skin issues. And, as we get closer to the Summer months my skin insecurities become slightly more pronounced. So, how do we become more comfortable “in our own skin?” Well, it’s all about knowing our issues, knowing what causes them and then how to deal with them.

One of my major issues is that I get these little white bumps on my face. My mother gets them too. I did some checking and found out that they are not what I thought they were – and, there is a way to treat them. It’s called “milia” and it’s protein caught under the skin. In addition to the information on the problem of milia, the general tips in this article are good to follow regardless.

Tip of the Day: Five Reasons Little White Bumps Are On Your Face and How to Get Rid Of Them

by Naweko San-Joyz

Are you making these mistakes each time you spot a little white little bump on your face? Fixing those little white bumps starts with a small dose of education and ends with a big dose of prevention. After understanding the five reasons below, your little bumps should give way to clearer skin.

Reason #1: You have no clue what those little white bumps are anyway.

Little white bumps, or milia, are keratin-filled cysts, or simply little globs of protein under the skin. There are generally two types of milia. Primary milia may result from oil glands that have not fully or properly developed. Secondary milia result from trauma to the skin.

Reason #2: You think all little white bumps are acne, and treat them that way.

Just because you have little white bumps on your face does not necessarily mean that you have acne. Milia, are little balls of protein beneath the skin that do not have a pore, or hole in the skin through which to escape.

Comedones or whiteheads are excess fats and wastes that are trapped in a hair follicle and so they clog up the pore. In short, milia are proteins trapped within the skin, while comedones are fats and skin debris trapped within the pore.

Exfoliating the skin, or removing the dead skin cells from your skin with an abrasive product or chemical, is beneficial. But brutally scrubbing your face with soaps and chemicals too frequently may actually create milia. To avoid this, remember that gentle exfoliation helps prevent excess dead skin cell build-up that could clog your pores and cause whiteheads, not milia.

This gentle exfoliation helps make eventual removal of the milia easier because the skin layer around the milia becomes thinner, with frequent, yet gentle exfoliation. In short, Exfoliate your skin to prevent milia, not to cure them.

Reason # 3 You have no idea what causes those little white bumps anyway.

When you were a baby, you were probably covered with milia that disappear after a few days. Or, you may have inherited milia from your parents.

On the other hand, you may develop milia after excessive exposure to the sun. The reasons for developing milia after sun exposure are debatable. According to some studies, the active ingredients sunscreens like Parsol 1789 may cause sun allergies and later lead to a milia breakout. Other studies blame the sun itself for “damaging” the skin can thus causing little white bumps.

Some people experience milia around the mouth. This could be the result of fluoride irritation from toothpaste.

Reason # 4: No one ever told you how to prevent milia.

The best way to prevent milia is to avoid treating your skin with excessively harsh chemicals and to limit sun exposure.

To reduce creating milia around the eyes, use eye creams with the least amount of ingredients possible to avoid irritating the delicately thin eye area. Also, gently touch the eyes and avoid rubbing the eyes vigorously so as not to damage the skin.

When brushing you teeth, try to keep the pasty foam from staying around your mouth too long. This limits possible fluoride irritation to the skin.

Use a sunscreen with the least amount of ingredients. Extraneous ingredients like fragrances may irritate your skin. Additionally, purchase sunscreens that offer physical sun blockage that contain active ingredients like titanium oxide or zinc oxide.

Reason #5: You still want to know what you can do right now to get rid of milia.

The key to getting rid of milia is realizing that they have no escape route, those little bumps are trapped under the skin. So, to get them out, you’ll need to have a professional like a dermatologist or aesthetician extract them. You can extract the milia yourself, but this involves risks.

Precautions You need to ensure that you milia are not symptoms of some underlying disease or illness. Also, if you extract the milia yourself, you may have trouble completely pulling out the cysts, as the removable process may prove too painful.

Otherwise, if you are confident with your health and courage, you can cleanse your hands and face. Then wet a cloth with warm water and apply it to your face for a few minutes. Gently apply a sterile needle to the center of the little white bump to create a tiny opening in the skin.

Wrap your thumbs in a clean tissue and, using your thumbs, proceed to gently squeeze the contents of the little white bump out. Finally, cleanse the area of the extracted little white bump with an astringent.

Now, you have no reason to walk around with little white bumps on your face. If you still think you do, please consider the possibility that you’re just telling yourself little white bumpy lies.

About the Author

Thursday, March 24, 2011

Don’t you just love that show “What Not To Wear” on TLC? Some of the ladies they highlight on that show are so out of touch with themselves and how they look. I have to admit though that I have recognized a look or two on that show that I can pull out of my own closet! There’s an “oops” moment!! Today I had just that type of quandary. It’s Spring but it’s not supposed to get more than 65 degrees here in the ATL and we woke up to the low 40′s – it’s chilly. So, what to do?

I put a winter jacket with a Spring outfit – and as you will see from the article below – that is a faux pas. Who knew??

Here is my thought for the day - if you are going to faux pas at least try to make it look good!

Tip of the Day: 11 Biggest Spring Fashion Faux Pas

I found this article on aol.com by Nancy Bhatta. Too bad I didn’t read it before I dressed this morning! How many of these do you break?

The sun is shining, flowers are in bloom, and birds are chirping. You know what that means… it’s finally spring! As you ready your wardrobe for the warmer weather, don’t let a fashion faux pas or two ruin your look. Use these tips and tricks as you spring forward to make sure that you don t fall back into bad fashion.

Faux Pas: Pairing a winter coat with your spring wardrobe is not the way to go when it gets chilly in spring. Even on the breeziest of days, winter woolens are way out of season.
Fab Possibility: Staying warm is a breeze with a beautiful spring jacket, like a Short Trenchcoat.

Faux Pas: Covering up your curves in last season’s tunic tops. This season, form-fitting is in, so send your oversized shirts to storage!
Fab Possibility: Flattering and shapely clothing like these too-cute Safari Shirtdresses.

Faux Pas: Dark and dull colors do not make for a stylish spring wardrobe. Avoid browns, blacks and dark blues when possible.
Fab Possibility: You’ll brighten every room when you wear lovely spring colors like these bright-hued Jones New York Crinkle silk halter dress.

Faux Pas: Wearing sandals without having had a recent pedicure is a huge faux pas. After an entire winter of staying under wraps, it s easy to forget to take care of one’s tootsies.
Fab Possibility: You don’t have to break the bank to keep your toes in shape. For half of the cost of one professional pedicure, pick up a bottle of OPI Classic Shades Nail Polish.

Faux Pas: Clothes covered entirely in sequins are not stylish for spring. All that glitters isn’t good for spring fashion, and it s time to let the sun outshine your shirt.
Fab Possibility: Savvy springtime fashionistas keep their sparkle limited, as shown in this Sequin-Hemmed Dress, which has just enough pizzazz.

Faux Pas: Simple solids are boring and blah. Plain clothes do nothing to put a spring in your step!
Fab Possibility: Go for unusual prints and patterns, like the one on these Print Knit Dresses, which is sure to get you noticed in a crowd.

Faux Pas: Super-high heels are too formal for most spring frocks. Besides, who can run on the beach in stilettos?
Fab Possibility: Fun flats like these slingback flats, which will keep your feet happy and your outfit sporty and in style this spring.

Faux Pas: Tiny purses leave no room for beach towels, sunglasses and all the accoutrements of springtime. Pocketbooks are one accessory where bigger certainly is better this season.
Fab Possibility: With this colorful large tote bag, you’ll be large and in charge of everyone’s keys when at the beach!

Faux Pas: Just like darker colors, dark jeans aren’t as stylish in the springtime. Save your darker denims for nighttime events when the weather is warm.
Fab Possibility: Perfect for warmer weather, white wash jeans just scream spring!

Faux Pas: Low-rise jeans aren’t in demand this season. Regular waistlines are, indeed, coming back to cover up your backside.
Fab Possibility: Waste no time getting back into more comfortable, high waist jeans.

Faux Pas: Oversized sunglasses are totally last season. Hooray- the insect-eyed look is finally out!
Fab Possibility: An old-school feel paired with circular frames is what s in this year.

One thing that I think is a MUST when you are dressing for a business casual environment is to make sure that at least one day a week you are wearing something that makes you smile. It can be a totally inside your own head joke (and, we all have those) or it can have just a hint of a theme of some sort. Today, for me, it’s gypsy day! But, other days it can be one element of a necklace or tie or something that spices up my look for the day.

The Cher song "Gypsies, Tramps and Theives" is going on in my head and cracking me up.

Tip of the Day: Spice Up Your Look

I found two really good articles on spicing up your look on a budget!!

Many people get bored with their current wardrobe and want to change, however their budget doesn’t always allow for a total wardrobe overhaul. You don’t necessarily need thousands of dollars to give your current wardrobe some kick. Here is how to update your look for less.

Instructions

Determine what budget you have to update your wardrobe. Adding some spice to your current wardrobe does require doing a bit of shopping but not necessarily a lot. Figure out how much you can currently spare.

Organize your wardrobe. Go through your current wardrobe and take inventory. If necessary, write everything down. Determine how many shirts, blouses, pants, skirts and jeans you own. Then categorize them by color to get an idea of what color is the base of your wardrobe.

Go shopping; this is the fun part. Take a weekend and visit a few stores. Discount stores like Target, Wal-Mart and Kmart are great places to pick up low-cost items. Also, thrift stores are great places to find low-cost wardrobe pieces. If necessary, map out the weekend. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes.

Focus on small pieces like accessories and simple shirts. Since you are on a budget, you don’t want to try to purchase whole outfits. Depending on your color base, find accessories that best compliment your wardrobe as a whole. Orange and yellow colors look great mixed in with different browns. Greens and reds look great with a black based wardrobe. Look for jewelry in different metallic colors. If you typically wear gold, go for the bronze and copper pieces. If you prefer silver, look for clear and black pieces but don’t be afraid of mix it up.

Make sure you stick to your initial budget. When you do decide to purchase something, make sure it is something that can be worn with a lot of different outfits. Your main goal for this shopping trip is to find a few great accessories that will compliment your entire wardrobe, not just one outfit. You want universal pieces.

Tips & Warnings

Don’t get set on one color palette. Be willing to experiment with splashes of color and prints, however be realistic with yourself. Don’t buy colors that obviously wash you out or make you look dowdy. When it doubt, take a friend.

If at all possible stay away from the malls and boutiques. These places are usually full of wonderful pieces that may be priced outside of the budget you set for yourself and could lead to overspending.

With fashion trends continuing to change every year, it can be extremely expensive to change your wardrobe to keep up with the hottest and most cutting edge trends of the season. Follow these tips to spice up your wardrobe without breaking the bank.

Invest money in key pieces like a little black dress, the perfect black trousers and a white tuxedo style shirt. These are items that are timeless. They were a trend 5 years ago and they will continue to be a trend in another 5 years from now.

Fashion Jewelry can add a spash of color to neutral clothing

Avoid investing too much money in colors of the season. If greens and purples are in today, they will be out tomorrow. My advice is to avoid buying apparel in too many shades. Sticking to neutral colors is always the best bet in order to get many years of use out of a piece of clothing. Purchase some fashion jewelry in a range of colors to add a splash to your neutral wardrobe. You can probably pick up a wardrobe of fashion jewelry for the price you would have spent on just one dress.

Change out your pocketbook. Ladies, we tend to carry our pocketbook everywhere we go so what better way to make a fashion statement. Pick up a few bags in different textures and shades so you can switch out your bags every other day to spice up your outfits.

Shoes are a great way to add personality to a plain outfit. Throw on a pair of leopard print pumps with that little black dress and you’ll be surprised how much it can dress up your look.

Tuesday, March 22, 2011

We all have days in which we need to “dress to impress.” It may be a job interview, a big company meeting, or (like me) a day meeting with bankers and lawyers that you are asking to loan you money. So, I did my best to dress to impress. Meaning, I want them to see that I am a responsible adult – but, still maintain my own sense of style. However, I did lean way to the conservative on this one. Plus, below you will find the best article I have found on women’s clothing and tips – this one is a keeper!

The pants are relatively new. They are dark brown with a pinstripe that matches the jacket. The shirt has dark brown little squares all over it.

THE SHOES!! I love these shoes and I’m so happy that it’s finally warm enough to wear them again!

These shoes were one of those DSW amazing deals. Two-toned brown and beautiful!!

Tip of the Day: Dressing to Impress

I found this article from an expert in body language named Robert Phipps. It is the absolute best article I’ve seen so far on the issue of women’s clothing for work. And, it’s written by a man – go figure. LOVE THIS ARTICLE!!

Dress to Impress – Women

Here’s a style chart and reference guide so your body language, at least from a clothing perspective, really does project the right image for you.

A person’s style includes many distinct elements. Decisions concerning style should be determined by environment, the need to meet certain expectations to gain your desired result. It is a commonly held belief that people will get ahead if they standout in terms of style, but research does not support this. In fact, we sometimes become suspicious of those who are too unusual or different from our expectations. Bearing this in mind, the following should be taken into account when trying to create the right impression….

CLOTHING AND ACCESSORIES

Believe it or not, studies have found that most hiring decisions are largely based upon a job applicant’s appearance, despite interviewers denying that someone’s appearance is important. Entry-level salaries are higher for those who make a better physical impression, and those who dress better at work are more likely to get promoted. The importance of being appropriately dressed is obvious. Both men and women when going for interviews should dress in clothes slightly smarter than what they would normally wear to work. WORKPLACE TIPS FOR WOMEN

WOMEN’S SUITS, TROUSERS, AND DRESSES

Women who wear ladylike feminine-cut suits, or skirts, and matching jackets with simple white, off-white or pale-coloured blouses are not only seen as strong and confident, but also as trustworthy, likable, and humble, but keep in mind that this might not work for all careers.

In more high-fashion professions, the suit should be more stylish, with more expressive accessories with your goal being a “ladylike” but professional look. Suits should be soft and feminine and strike a balance between understated and conservative, feminine and fashionable. Colours can range from navy, grey, and blue to cream and mahogany. The look should be rich but businesslike.

A masculine-cut suit reflects more power and authority, but will be interpreted as more aggressive and domineering and less creative. A feminine-cut suit will show more expressiveness, and a heightened level of approachability, professionalism and confidence. Slacks and a jacket, or a dress, and a jacket is even more approachable, but less professional. A pant-suit is less professional and will not enhance your image of approachability. A dress without a jacket is the least professional alternative.

WOMEN’S SHIRTS AND BLOUSES

Silk blouses in white, off-white, light blue, beige, or other pale colours are more professional. Blouses with lapels project more authority and competence, while those without are more feminine and project a friendlier image. Blouses should not be sleeveless if they are intended to be a part of a professional outfit. You should also take into account a slip or camisole if a bra or strap is showing. For professional occasions, the neckline should never be low enough to be the slightest bit revealing.

WOMEN’S SHOES

Trendy styles have the same negative associations and stereotypes as other parts of your wardrobe. More functional shoes enhance image as long as they are not too flashy. Less functional but more stylish shoes send a message that you are more concerned with appearance than performance. If women wear heels taller than two inches they accentuate their sexuality. Boots should not be worn with dress attire unless they are very frequently worn by others in your professional environment. Shoes that are simple and elegant are best. Closed toe pumps with one and a half inch heels top the list. Shorter women can wear two inch heels but they should not be spiked heels. Stay with basic colours and don’t try to match your shoes to bright coloured clothing. Always keep your shoes clean and polished for a professional look. If the soles or heels are worn or damaged, then replace or repair them.

WOMEN’S ACCESSORIES

For women, belts come in many colours and styles. They should not be gaudy, dangle or make noise. If a woman is wearing dress trousers then she should wear a simple, thin belt with an unobtrusive buckle. Accessories, like belts and shoes, should be plain, no frill leather.

For purses, leather is perceived as more professional than fabric, especially in black or brown. A colourful purse that matches the colour of an outfit is more for casual occasions. A woman’s tights should be flesh tone, black or navy. White or other colours distract from professional image.

For eyewear, a woman should not get too trendy, unless an image of expressiveness is more important than an image of intelligence and professionalism. Women are rated more professional when they wear less jewellery. Keep it simple and stay away from the large or gaudy.

WOMEN’S FIT

Women’s dress trousers should cover their ankles completely, and for the most professional and conservative look should touch the top of their shoes. Unlike men’s trousers, women’s should have little or no “break,” and the hem should be horizontal to the floor.

Skirt length is always an issue for women. For a professional look, stay mainstream. Whether you wear your dress skirts a few inches above or a few inches below your knee is largely a matter of personal preference, and a decision that should be based on what looks best on you, and what you feel most comfortable with.

COLOURS – THEIR EFFECT ON OTHERS

Colours have a very powerful way of affecting our impressions both of people. Colours can affect our impression of such traits as status, effectiveness, attitude, credibility, friendliness and intelligence. Most colours can be grouped into one of six general categories, each of which conveys a distinct set of messages.

Black, dark blue and dark charcoal grey are strong authoritarian colours. Those in positions of leadership, or authority will project an image of no-nonsense confidence, strength and power. Black is also seen as serious, secretive, mysterious and depressing. For that reason, those who dress in black are not rated as warm and friendly. People at the top of an organization wear black effectively, but also service oriented occupations such as drivers and waiters are often seen in black. It is often said that black is stylish and sophisticated and makes you look thinner. That’s true, but it’s popularity doesn’t overcome the stereotypes and emotional responses it evokes.

Lighter shades of grey and navy blue are also associated with power, authority, leadership and even loyalty. Unlike dark grey and black, studies show that they are warmer and more approachable. For men, navy blue is definitely preferred; but for women, a medium shade of blue is ideal. Grey pinstripe has been associated with projecting wisdom. Green, particularly olive and can project flexibility and friendliness.

Bright colours like red, turquoise, purple, bright blues, and greens and fuchsia are sexy, energetic, hard-charging, and aggressive. They are generally not considered as professional as darker colours, or lighter shades of colours.

Lighter shades of blue, green, and yellow, as well as tan and beige, convey a sense of warmth, friendliness, approachability and trustworthiness. They do not communicate the same sense of authority, power, or leadership that dark blues or greys project. Subtle tones, however, can be very effective to combine friendliness and professionalism. Certain shades of tan can remind people of government employees and come across as dated or institutional.

Autumn colours-like rust, brown, muted shades of yellow or gold, olive and burgundy are perceived as trustworthy, caring and humble, but lacks in the strength, competency and leadership categories. These are good choices for caring professionals such as psychologists or counsellors, or anyone whose first priority is to be approachable.

Pastels are the most feminine of all colours. Not surprisingly, stereotypical feminine traits are associated with them, such as caring and nurturing on the positive side, and weakness and vulnerability on the negative. Not a good choice if you want to be viewed as serious, intelligent, competent, and professional.

Expensive clothing tends to be richer, deeper and more vibrant than less expensive clothes. They use higher quality dye and expensive fabrics tend to absorb the dye better. This has a significant impact to the impressions people get. Rich deep colours project class, quality, competence, success and professionalism. Less vibrant clothing is perceived as lower class, less competent and less professional.

There are many ways that colours can be used as an integral part of you making the right impression. For example, if you have a number of traits that can be interpreted as overpowering or threatening, such as large size or height, lighter colours will soften your impression; but won’t cause you to lose your image of confidence and control because your other traits will continue to send that message.

BASIC RULE OF THUMB FOR DRESSING

Wear dark colours to command authority or stress intelligence.

If you want others to relax, feel comfortable, and think of you as likable and approachable, wear lighter colours or autumn hues.

To create excitement or draw attention, wear bright colours.

Wear rich, dark colours associated with quality clothing. You’re better off wearing less pieces of higher quality clothes.

Evaluate how your image will be enhanced or diminished by the colour of clothing that you wear. Unless your collective traits are overpowering, darker colours are better for a professional environment.

Different circumstances will call for different emphasis. Many people view synthetic fabrics and those who wear them in a negative light. Natural fabrics like wool, cotton, silk and linen convey a more honest, warm and professional image.

PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER:

Be as attractive as you can, unless you’re absolutely gorgeous, if so, don’t flaunt it.

Don’t set yourself apart, especially above your peers.

Always dress appropriately for the occasion and environment.

Opt for traditional styles, fabrics and colours unless creative flair is clearly essential.

Buy the most expensive clothes you can afford, even if it means less of them.

Don’t overemphasize sex appeal.

Give as much thought to casual wear as to professional wear.

Don’t try to be a trendsetter.

Always be clean and neat.

Dress as trendily and formally as the top 70 to 90% of those in your environment.

Monday, March 21, 2011

Okay, I know those are not the words of the Bowie song, but considering this is the first workday of the Spring – I took liberties. This is the time of year where I live (Atlanta) when you really can’t tell what to wear in the mornings. It’s slightly chilly in the morning and burning up in the afternoon. But, it also means that Spring is here!! Yay! Open toed shoes, lighter clothing, well built guys mowing the lawn without shirts on (hey, I’m single – I can look). Spring!!

I’ve found two ways to deal with our kind of Spring weather – layers and/or light clothing. Layers with a sweater in the morning that I can take off mid afternoon with a cute t-shirt or cami underneath. Or, like today, I’ll wear a very light shirt under a jacket that has a little weight to it. I still have a cami under the shirt so if it gets too hot then I can take the shirt off and still be in the business casual mode.

Spring has sprung and I for one am thrilled!!!

Tip of the Day: Spring Trends

This is a great article that was in the weekend edition of The Birmingham News by their fashion editor, Chanda Temple on the trends for Spring 2011:

Sunday is the first day of spring. Are you ready to welcome in some of the pretty predictions in spring fashion?

Here’s what’s in:

*It’s back to the ’70s this spring with flowy fabrics, longer skirts and wide-legged jeans. Get ready to see bellbottoms that skim the ground.

*Easy dressing will be found in the romper, maxi dress, sundress, cargo pants, palazzo pants and tunics.

*Expect to see a lot of flower power, color blocking, platform wedges, earthtones, cork-heeled shoes, simplified gladiator sandals and the reddish pink shade of honeysuckle, which will be in clothes, make-up, accessories and even home decor.

*Dresses with a fitted waistline and billowy skirt will give women a comfortable silhouette.

*Big is in, from sunhats and bangles to watch faces and earrings.

*Sheer tops were a hit on the runway. When wearing this look around town, be sure to have something on underneath, like a bandeau top that matches your skintone.

*Blue and orange will be a popular combo. Auburn University football fans have loved burnt orange and navy blue since the late 1800s. This spring, it’s likely that fashionistas will, too.

*Belts are back. Wide or skinny, they can help complete an outfit.

Friday, March 18, 2011

I love khakis! To me they are the perfect pant – comfortable, roomy (at least the good ones are), and can go from work to leisure with the change of a top. But, it’s also a little bit of a challenge for me to femme up khaki pants (aka chinos). I like being a girl – so, when someone tells me to avoid heels with a certain pant then I have to admit a slight disappointment. But, they are right. With khaki’s heels look silly. SO, I went searching for the perfect khaki/chino looks and found some great tips from various sources. Hope you love these pants as much as I do.

I'm rocking the "Wonder Woman" hairdo today! Props to Lynda Carter!!

Look Mom - No heels!!

Tip of the Day: How to wear Khakis/Chinos

Originally the color of tropical British military uniforms, the shade of khaki has come a long way and is prevalent around the world today. Because of the popularity of khaki pants over recent years, the color has become a must-have item in women’s closets. In addition to this, the color “khaki” has evolved into varying shades of the original version, and there are many ways to wear them all in a flattering way.

Instructions

Original Khaki

Pair the customary shade with an array of different colors. Combine it with exciting, bright colors including red, purple and green to create a noticeable contrast. Bright yellow is also a possibility, but make sure that it’s bright enough to create a divergent look. If you couple this standard shade with a muted yellow, the entire outfit will likely look drab and boring.

Try a red scarf and belt for more energy and style or choose colorful shoes to add a vibrant touch to your look. Flower-patterned blouses also look stylish and feminine with a pair of khaki pants or chinos.

Couple this shade with light and/or dark browns and mossy greens, or a combination of all of them, for earthier ensembles.

Add a white T-shirt and neutral-colored shoes for a clean, crisp look.

Light Khaki

Combine this lighter version (that has some ivory and/or muted yellow shades in it) with bolder, darker colors to create more of a contrast in your outfit. Black is an option as is dark blue and/or denim colors.

Add a jean jacket for a casual look, or try colorful accessories and scarves to brighten and dress up your outfit.

Dress up a casual ensemble with khaki cropped pants and pointy pumps, or try a stylish handbag to add a simple or fun touch.

Darker Khaki

Complement this darker take on the original version with earthy tones. It carries more brown and/or olive tones in it, and because of its dimmer earthen look, lighter tans, greens and other beige hues complement it nicely.

Finish it off with brown or olive-toned sandals or flat, ballet shoes in a neutral shade.

Pair this darker hue with light gray or cream, or try pale shades of green and yellow. Light or pale blue looks especially good with dark khaki colors.

WOMEN’S KHAKI PANTS

Women khaki pants ought hang on your hips – not cinch them. Furthermore they ought be a little slouchy without being baggy.” This more at ease fit is as well masculine without it appear like you’re swimming in your pants. To pleat, or not to pleat? – Whether you’re a man or a woman it had better be noted that you ought avoid pleated khakis at all costs if you prefer to appear actual as well as cool in your khakis. Pleats create bulk right around your hips, giving your khakis that baggy, big abdomen look (not so flattering). They still make it appear like you’re stuck in the 20th century, as latest khaki makers leave the pleats out.Don’t get tapered – For both sexes ensure your khakis don’t have tapered legs, for they will make your body appear like it’s an inverted triangle because your hips will appear wider than they are.

Today is all about the green and questions. It’s St. Patrick’s Day so I’m honoring the minute drop of Irish blood in my line and wearing green. I also want to find out what your greatest questions are regarding your wardrobe, style, beauty, etc. So, what do you want to know more about? Either post the question here or send me an email in the “got tips” comment section and I’ll be happy to help find answers to your questions.
